Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has some fresh updates for Star Trek and science-fiction fans alike. Noga Landau (showrunner, executive producer) and Alex Kurtzman (showrunner, executive producer), attended Comic Con this year to give updates on the beginnings of this new series.
Casting is almost complete, with all except one of the main roles being filled by “a bunch of newcomers”, according to Landau. A clip was shown from the freshly cast actors, and they are all seemingly young, new names and faces to the industry. Landau seemed extremely excited about the casting choices, promising the audience that “They’re really good”. Other cast members include Holly Hunter, playing the Head Chancellor, and Paul Giamatti, playing the show’s villain. Apparently when Giamatti heard that he had been cast for the role, “he cried, he was so excited”, shared Kurtzman.
The final question that got answered in this panel was: Will there be legacy characters? And the answer is, yes there will be. Tig Notaro (returning as Jett Reno), Oded Fehr (returning as Charles Vance), Mary Wiseman (returning as Sylvia Tilly), and Robert Picardo (returning as The Doctor) will all join the show as well.
While information other than casting is limited now, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy shows promise with the choices made for which actors will tell this next Star Trek story.
