Variety has learned, Netflix and the very talented Regina King have inked a multi year deal, that will see King’s production company, Royal Ties, produce both films and series for the streaming platform. Despite its previous production deal with ABC, King’s sister (Reina King) will serve as head of production for the company.
Chief content officer at Netflix, Ted Sarandos, welcomed the collaboration with open arms:
Regina King is a multi-faceted talent both behind and in front of the camera. She’s been a trailblazer for years, with boundless creativity and impeccable taste in projects, and we couldn’t be more thrilled that she will bring her formidable talents to Netflix.
The news comes on the heels of King’s recent win for best supporting actress at 2019’s Academy Awards, for her performance in If Beale Street Could Talk. Meanwhile, her other recent collaboration with Netflix, saw her portray the mother of a young man who was murdered during a racially motivated hate crime in Seven Seconds — which also earned her third Emmy Award.
Throughout 2015 to 2017, television audiences may also remember her turn as Erika Murphy in the HBO drama The Leftovers, for which she received a Critics’ Choice Television Award nomination. And, her role in the ABC anthology series American Crime, for which she received three Primetime Emmy Award nominations, winning twice.
“I am beyond thrilled to join the Netflix family. They are at the top of their game and as an artist I am so excited to come play in this wonderful sandbox they have created for storytellers,” King said in an officially released statement.
Other credits for the actress include, directing episodes of TV shows including: This is Us and The Good Doctor. King can be seen next in Damon Lindelof’s upcoming HBO television series adaption of, The Watchmen.
