Rebecca Gibney is set to reprise her role in the crime thriller mini-series Halifax: Retribution, Variety has learned. The show is a revival of the Australian series that aired from 1994 to 2002 on the Nine Network. The new show follows the character Jane Halifax, a forensic psychiatric (Gibney), who is called back to the police front line and hunts a sniper who is terrorizing the city of Melbourne.
The creator and writer of the original series Roger Simpson (Stingers, Satisfaction, Good Guys, Bad Guys) serves as writer and producer, together with executive producer Mikael Borglund and writers Mac Gudgeon (Killing Time), Jan Sardi (Shine), and Peter Gawler (Underbelly), Variety reports.
“I’ve had people asking me for years if we could bring Jane Halifax back,” Gibney told 9Honey Celebrity. “I loved the character – Roger Simpson created her especially for me, so I’ve often wondered whether we would bring her back or not,” Gibney added.
“It’s a fantastic idea so I couldn’t say no,” she said. “The chance to re-team with Roger is such a wonderful opportunity. He’s one of the best producers Australia’s ever produced. So I’m just really excited about re-teaming with him.”
Nine’s director of TV, Michael Healy said: “We are delighted to welcome Rebecca back to Nine. She is a legend of Australian television and we are honoured that she will bring back one of Australia’s most iconic characters in the exciting new chapter of this renowned franchise.”
The cast also includes Hannah Monson (Glitch), Jacqueline McKenzie (Romper Stomper, Safe Harbour), Rick Donald (A Place to Call Home, 800 Words), Craig Hall (A Place to Call Home, The Doctor Blake Mysteries), Mavournee Hazel (My Life is Murder, Neighbours) and Louisa Mignone (Ms Fisher’s Modern Murder Mysteries, Secret City: Under the Eagle).
Production will begin in August 2019.
