Within the second season of the popular series, Squid Game introduced an interesting character, Guard 011, aka No-eul, played by Park Gyu-young (Sweet Home), who seemed to have motivation throughout the games. According to Screenrant, we see a little of her backstory early on, where she is working at an amusement park, struggling to earn some money, until she is recruited by the Front Man, not to be a participant but a guard
According to Screenrant, viewers can clearly see that her actions are guided by her own code. One example is from the third episode when the contestant played the game Red Light, Green Light. She scanned for any movement until she recognized a contestant she had met and sympathized with who was in the same situation as her.
In an interview with Screenrant, Gyu-young stated, “[No-eul] has no other purpose in life than to reunite with her child. [She’s] harboring the kind of indescribable agony that cannot be expressed in words.” She continued, “No-eul begins working at the game with the mission of letting hopeless people pass on peacefully without pain. She’s someone who can’t go on living but must do so. She joins the game with the idea of lifting others’ pain and giving peace to those suffering just like her.”
According to Screenrant, this defiance, however, carries significant risks. It directly opposes the interests of her superiors, who profit from the exploitation of the players. These actions paint her as a potential threat to the organization and set the stage for an internal conflict to happen in the future seasons.
Guard 011’s actions in the series change the trajectory and morality in the second season, and viewers wonder whether a traitor is a hero. Fans can watch the entire first and second seasons of the popular Korean drama on Netflix.
