News on the upcoming American Squid Game spin-off series has been met with skepticism from fans worldwide. According to Comicbook, Netflix’s global phenomenon, which started back in September 21, 2021 has captivated fans with its unique premise of numerous participants completing deadly challenges based on children games. This will pose as challenge for the spin-off to replicating the same formal, while adding their own twist to the story.
According to Comicbook, the main reason behind the contestant’s motivation with continuing the challenges due to financial hardship and social norms, which were another factor that made the series recognizable. The new cast that will be joining the spin-off series will need to learn on what Squid Game is and the context behind it. It is also unknown on whether the challenges will remain the same or be more American themed games, such as the floor is lava or capture the flag.
According to mxdwn, the final season finale acted as closing the chapter for the series protagonist, Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae (The Acolyte, New World), who selflessly sacrificed himself in order to protect the baby. In the end, the Front-Man, played by Lee Byung-hun (K-Pop Demon Hunters, Red 2), went to visit Gi-hun’s daughter, which then cuts towards a surprising cameo by Cate Blanchett (How to Train Your Dragon, Borderlands) playing the Recruiter for American games.
According to Comicbook, it was reported that David Fincher (Fight Club, Seven) will be directing the series and intends to begin production on it as soon as this year. While fans await on further news on what direction the approaching spin-off will take, all three seasons of the original Squid Game are available to stream on Netflix. Additionally, the reality show based on the original series, Squid Game: The Challenge is also available to stream, and renewed for a second season.
