‘Real Steel’ Punches Back: TV Series Gets Writer’s Bell

According to Screenrant, the director of the film Real Steel named Shawn Levy (Free Guy), has given a positive update and green light to the TV adaptation of the acclaimed film. Levy has given a quote on details related to the show and states, “Does the show have a writing team? Gosh, do I need to lie? Yes is the answer.”

The film Real Steel focuses on Charlie Keaton, played by Hugh Jackman (The Greatest Showman), who works with his estranged son named Max, played by Dakota Goyo (Rise of the Guardians), to build a champion robot from scratch. The film was released in 2011 and had a decent rating of 60% and a total gross income of around $3 million. The sci-fi film filmed after a decade of its release date landed in the top ten on Netflix in 2023.

While a direct sequel, Real Steel 2, hasn’t materialized, a TV series offers a chance to expand the rich universe Levy created. It allows for deeper dives into the cutthroat world of robot boxing, exploring the lives of fighters, their handlers, and the tech behind these mechanical marvels. Changing to a tv format gives the chance to open the door to introduce new character and new storylines in the franchise. This change could also help in attracting new viewers.

According to Screenrant, Levy has risen in Hollywood by producing smash hits, such as Netflix’s Stranger Things and collaborating with renowned actor Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) on The Adam Project and the upcoming Wolverine and Deadpool.

While there’s no word yet on casting or a release date, the news of a writing team assembled signifies a significant step forward for the project. The premise of the TV series remains a mystery, but somehow it is connected to the film and sure to share similarity such with the robotic fighting.
