Abbott Elementary creator and star Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary, A Black Lady Sketch Show) is making a major career move. According to Deadline, Brunson has signed a five-year overall deal with 20th Television through her production company, Fifth Chance Productions.
The agreement comes after Brunson completed a four-year overall deal with Warner Bros. Television, which produces Abbott Elementary alongside 20th Television. Under the new pact, Brunson will write, develop, and executive produce projects across Disney Entertainment Television’s brands and platforms.
The move is notable because Brunson is departing Warner Bros. Television while Abbott Elementary remains one of broadcast television’s most successful comedies. The Emmy-winning ABC series is preparing to enter its sixth season this fall and continues to be a strong performer in both ratings and streaming.
mxdwn previously covered comments from Brunson and co-star Janelle James (Abbott Elementary, Central Park) regarding the show’s fifth season. That report focused on the continued evolution of the characters and the creative team’s efforts to keep the workplace comedy fresh while maintaining the relationships that helped make the series a success. Brunson’s new deal suggests that even as she expands her work beyond Abbott Elementary, the acclaimed comedy remains central to her career.
According to Deadline, Brunson will continue her involvement with Abbott Elementary. She remains under an eight-season acting agreement and will continue serving as an executive producer while co-showrunning the series alongside Justin Halpern (Harley Quinn, Powerless) and Patrick Schumacker (Harley Quinn, Powerless).
Disney Entertainment Television Chairman Debra OConnell praised Brunson in a statement shared with Deadline, describing her as “a cultural force” and one of the industry’s most influential storytellers. Brunson also called the deal “an exciting next chapter” and expressed gratitude toward Disney, Warner Bros. Television, and 20th Television for their support.
Deadline notes that the move comes amid uncertainty for Warner Bros. Discovery as the company navigates a proposed acquisition by Paramount. Despite the studio change, Brunson will remain closely connected to Abbott Elementary, which has earned four Emmy Awards, three Golden Globes, and a Peabody Award.
With the new agreement in place, Brunson is set to continue developing projects while building the future of Fifth Chance Productions under the Disney and 20th Television banner.
