Quinta Brunson Shares The Upcoming ‘Abbott Elementary ‘And ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Crossover

The city in It’s Always Sunny in Philidelphia, known for its famous cheesesteaks and Water Ice, will morph with another show, Abbott Elementary. Many prominent figures like Kevin Hart (Jumanji, Night School), Will Smith (The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Men in Black), Meek Mill (All Eyes On You), Kobe Bryant (Sister, Sister, Moesha), Nafessa Williams (Black Light Lightning, Rivals), Jill Scott(A Long Walk, Golden)and Jazmine Sullivan(Bust Your Windows, Pick Up Your Feelings) are natives. According to Deadline, another native, Quinta Brunson (Abbott, Magical Girl Friendship Squad), who is also the creator, writer, executive producer and actress, dropped the exclusive details about their huge crossover between It’s Always Sunny in Philidelphia and Abbott Elementary.
Brunson plays the role of Janine Teagues, a second-grade teacher at the fictional Abbott Elementary School in Philadelphia.

According to Deadline, the news was revealed at Vulture Fest. Brunson, the main character and creator of Abbott, shared a few details of how the crossover went and what they plan for it to look like.

Sometimes crossovers are from one show’s perspective, but in this case, Abbott Elementary and It’s Always Sunny in Philidelphia are set to have one episode on each show. The first crossover is set to premiere early next year.

A quote from Brunson in an article via Deadline states, “Our episode will air in January. So, it will be an Abbott Elementary episode,” Brunson explained. “But the first episode of Always Sunny — I don’t know when their episode’s going to air, probably in June. Their episode will be their version of what happened in this storyline.”

According to Deadline, while season four of Abbott Elementary delves into the theme of gentrification in the school’s Philadelphia neighborhood, and season 17 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is set to premiere on FXX in 2025, the specifics of the crossover plot remain under wraps.

Brunson, the creator of Abbott Elementary, shared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last month that the crossover came about in a “really exciting” way.

“I was very inspired by watching a lot of shows over the pandemic,” she explained. “I was binging Family Matters and Full House and stuff like that, and I was shocked at how shocked I was when Steve Urkel showed up on the Full House set. I was screaming at my TV.”

Social media is responsible for many things, such as the cancelation of people’s careers and the start of people’s careers. Social media was pivotal for Golden Globe winner Brunson, who shared that her connection with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star and creator Rob McElhenney (The Tollbooth, Long Story Short) began after fans on social media noted similarities between their shows, both set in Philadelphia.

“Something came up online, and he was like, ‘Someone said this seems like a Sunny episode, this seems like an Abbott episode,’” Brunson recalled. “And then we kind of connected over that. And then we really connected in person, and I just get along with him and his team so well, that we felt like we could actually do this.”

After teasing the crossover last month, Brunson and McElhenney have now shared photos from the set with their blended cast, generating excitement among fans of both series.

This unexpected collaboration not only promises to bring together two beloved shows but also highlights the creative synergy between their creators, hinting at a memorable and unique viewing experience for audiences.
