The upcoming short-form streaming platform Quibi has added Chance the Rapper to its ever growing list of collaborators. The newest series announced in the platform’s lineup is a revival of the early 2000s prank show Punk’d, to be hosted by Chance.
MTV Studios, which produced the original Punk’d series created and hosted by Ashton Kutcher, will be teaming up with Quibi to produce the revival series. Punk’d ran for ten seasons on MTV before being cancelled in 2007 and drew heavy inspiration from hidden camera shows like Candid Camera. The premise of the show was unique in that it targeted celebrities for the pranks rather than unknown individuals. The Punk’d revival appears to follow the same premise, and though the targeted celebrities have yet to be announced, the teaser release by Quibi for the show features Megan Thee Stallion as one of the targets.
In a statement, Chance the Rapper expressed his enthusiasm for the show’s revival. “Punk’d is one of MTV’s most iconic franchises,” said Chance. “I grew up watching this show and it’s surreal to be in the driver’s seat this time around on Quibi.”
Punk’d joins a growing lineup of shows that will be available on Quibi at the platform’s launch this April. Quibi already has a few reality shows being developed, including a miniature cooking show hosted by Andy Samberg, a Judge Judy style show hosted by Chrissy Teigen, and an adventure show titled Killing Zac Efron that almost killed Zac Efron (not a joke, the actor actually fell seriously ill during the show’s production). Quibi will also have a number of scripted shows, including a reboot of the comedy cult-favorite Reno 911!, and animated series from 50 Cent, and a gaming thriller CURS_R by Ridley Scott.
The new Punk’d season will consist of 20 episodes, each under ten minutes in accordance with Quibi’s short-form video model. The show will be produced by STXtelevision alongside MTV Studios. Punk’d is executive produced by Jason Goldberg. Quibi launches on April 6th of this year. You can watch the teaser trailer for Punk’d featuring Chance the Rapper below.
