Legendary director Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction, Once Upon a Time In Hollywood) just joined the Showtime anthology show Super Pumped: The Battle For Uber in a narrator role. This announcement comes just days after the show was renewed for a second season.
The first season, premiering on Showtime February 27, will follow the rise of the transportation company Uber from its inception in Silicon Valley to the height of the company’s economic prosperity. The addition of Tarantino reunites the acclaimed filmmaker with his long time collaborator Uma Thurman (Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction) for the first time since the critically acclaimed action movie Kill Bill Vol. 2.
While Tarantino’s addition is polarizing because of his stardom, the real focus of the show is fellow acclaimed actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception, Looper) as he takes on the role of the company’s ruthless, ecstatic CEO Travis Kalanick.
As mentioned, the show is being sold as an anthology series focusing on tech start ups and their controversial CEOs behind them. Deadline reports that the newly announced second season will more focus on Mark Zuckerburg and the creation of Facebook. It is unknown if the same star studded cast, now including Tarantino, will be recast in new roles for that season in an American Horror Story-esque type of story telling.
This is not Tarantino’s first foray into narration as he has lent his voice many time to his own films such as Once Upon a Time In Hollywood and The Hateful Eight. He also is known for making cameos in his films and even starring in them as he did in Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. With this pattern, there may be a possibility of seeing Tarantino in the show instead of just his voice; however, he is not joining the show in a producer or directorial role as he had during filming of those previous cameos, so who knows if loyal Tarantino addicts will get their fill of the king cinephile himself.
