Amazon Studios announced that they have officially signed Ólafur Darri (The Trap, Deep) to play Thor in the God of War television show from Sony Pictures. A serious yet important counter to the main character.
Darri is an actor who has been seen in Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue, Severance, Your Friends and Neighbors, Somebody Somewhere, and La Palma. He has been announced to be in upcoming projects of 121212, a heist series for Apple TV; A Winter’s Journey for Sony Pictures Classics; and Blood on Snow, which is directed by Cary Fukunaga (Jane Fyre, Sin Nombre). In the TV world, he has starred in the Golden Globe–nominated The Missing, Trapped, The Tourist, The Widow, NOS4A2, Quarry, True Detective and Lady Dynamite. The silver screen provides his credits as Eurovision, Murder Mystery, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (Warner Bros.), and The Meg (Warner Bros.).
Amazon Studios describes Thor differently than what we see in Marvel. They describe him as a God of Thunder who is mountainous and has fought many battles. This time his fights from the past cause him PTSD and haunt his waking hours. He once was loyal to his kingdom and father, but is now a shell of his former self. Thor now drowns himself in alcohol to hide his depression and to not think about his long past. Even with being a shell of himself, he still is the God of thunder, still strong and dangerous under the surface.
The show is tightly based on the video game of the same name that grew massively popular. It also has been renewed for two seasons, and pre-production in Vancouver, Canada. With casting already starting for roles, we know that the cast that was announced before returns. They include Ryan Hurst (The Walking Dead, Sons of Anarchy) as Kratos and Max Parker (Last of Us, We Bury the Dead) as Heimdall. The show is to follow Kratos and Atreus as they spread the wife and mother’s ashes, Faye in remembrance. The duo teaches each other what it means to be a God and what it means to be a father.
Fredrick E.O Toye (Shogun, The Boys) has been asked to direct the first two episodes of the show. God of War is also directed by Sony Pictures, Amazon MGM studios as well as Playstation Productions and Tall Ship Studios. Ronald D. Moore (Caprica, Outlander) serves as director and writer. Other people who are working hard on this project include Maril Davis (Outlander), Cory Barlog (Niche, Raising Kratos), Naren Shankar (Heroes and Demons, Of Dolls and Murder), Matthew Graham (Doctor Who, Life on Mars), Asad Qizilbash (Resident Evil, Uncharted), Jeff Ketcham (Just Go With It, Vacancy), Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee (Weapon, Barbarian), and Brad Van Arragon (Juno, Lost In Space). Not to mention, Joe Menosky (Hiding Out, Anonymous Rex), Marc Bernardin (Splinter, Clerk), Tania Lotia (Invincible, The Witcher), and Ben McGinnis (Helix, Outlander) serve as co-executive producers on the series.
