The dance has ended for Prime Video’s Etoile. Deadline reports the series has been canceled after one season, despite being picked up for an initial two-season order. Ultimately, the decision came down to the show’s cost versus its performance with viewers.
Ordered in 2023 from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creators Amy Sherman-Palladino (The Gilmore Girls) and Daniel Palladino (Bunheads), the series received a straight-to-series order, via Deadline. After pausing production due to the year’s WGA strike, the eight-episode season finally arrived this April.
According to Deadline, the series failed to appear on Nielsen’s Top 10 Originals list and was knocked from Prime Video’s top spot by Reacher’s third season which premiered a month prior. It failed to reappear on the list even while other shows, like the now-canceled fantasy series, The Wheel of Time, continued to chart nearly two months after its third season ended.
Despite the series’ critical acclaim, Deadline reports it failed to gain popularity on social media or word of mouth. That’s a stark contrast to Mrs. Maisel which aired five seasons, winning Emmys for its lead, Rachel Brosnahan (House of Cards, Superman), and the Palladinos. Despite canceling the show without a second season, Amazon MGM Studios plans to support the show’s Emmy campaign.
Etoile told the story of two prestigious ballet companies suffering from dancer’s block. Facing financial hardships, the esteemed troupes — one in the States and the other in France — think outside the box and exchange dancers to spark a push of creativity. The cast included familiar faces, Luke Kirby (Gossip Girl, Panhandle) and Gideon Glick (American Horror Story, The Pale Blue Eye), along with Lou de Laâge (Where Life Begins, Black Box) in her first English-speaking role.
Other stars were David Alvarez (West Side Story, American Rust), Simon Callow (Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Phantom of the Opera), Charlotte Gainsbourg (Belle, Meet the Leroys), Ivan du Pantavice (Damned, Bet on Dwight!), Taïs Vinolo (The Show Must Go On), David Haig (My Boy Jack, Two Weeks Notice), and LaMay Zhang.
Season one of Etoile is available to stream on Prime Video.
