Prime Video has revealed six new members of the supporting cast for its upcoming historical drama Bloodaxe, which will detail the life of Norwegian King and conqueror Eric “Bloodaxe” Haraldsson during the Middle Ages. The Amazon-owned streamer made the announcement last Thursday through their official website, the same place Bloodaxe was first announced this March.
Karlis Arnolds Avots (Soviet Jeans, The Good Neighbor), Rod Hallett (The Silence, The Hitman’s Bodyguard), Alina Tomnikov (Funeral For A Dog, The Worst Idea Ever), Sisse Marie (Rebel Moon, The Dunning Man), and Rune Temte (Little Siberia, Time Bandits) will all join the series’ principal cast. Jesper Christensen (Into The Darkness, The Bench) will also feature in a recurring role. Avots, Hallett, and Tomnikov will serve antagonistic roles, while Marie, Temte, and Christensen will portray previous rulers of Scandinavia that both Bloodaxe and his wife Gunnhild, “Mother of Kings,” seek for counsel.
Prime Video previously announced that the boots of the infamous power couple will be filled by Xavie Molyneux (Take My Hand, Neighbors), perhaps best known for his role on British reality show Big Brother, and Jessica Madsen (Dark Light, Leatherface), who played debutante Cressida Cowper on Netflix’s Bridgerton. Meanwhile, showrunner Michael Hirst will write and executive produce the series, which marks his third foray into the Norse Ages after 2013’s Vikings and its 2022 spinoff, Vikings: Valhalla. He is joined this time by his son Horatio Hirst, who also played a minor recurring role on Valhalla.
“I feel blessed and deeply excited that Amazon has given me the opportunity to return to the fantastic world of the Norse Sagas and the men, women and gods of the Viking world who have come to mean so much to me,” the elder Hirst said in a statement accompanying Bloodaxe’s announcement. “Horatio and I intend to open your eyes to incredible new characters and unbelievable stories, all of which happen to be true and many of which changed the course of history.”
Bloodaxe will begin filming sometime later this summer in Iceland and Ireland. No release date has been set, but once completed, Amazon will release the series exclusively in over 240 countries worldwide. In the meantime, those searching for Viking action can scratch the itch with Vikings and Vikings: Valhalla, both of which are streaming now on Netflix.
