Warning: this article contains spoilers for season one of Sausage Party: Foodtopia, as well as the original Sausage Party movie.
Sausage Party: Foodtopia’s second season will hit the grill in autumn of this year, according to a press release from Prime Video this Tuesday. The follow-up to Seth Rogen’s (The Studio, Invincible) raunchy and controversial 2016 R-rated animated movie, which follows a grocery store of sentient food items that rebel against humanity after learning of their impending digestion, will release on the streaming platform on August 13th.
Season one of the series saw Frank (voiced by Rogen) and his fellow foodstuffs struggling with the politics of running a food-led society in the wake of their successful uprising. In a shocking twist, the season finale ended with Frank betraying his friends after losing his faith in their ability to self-govern, forcibly installing himself as leader of Foodtopia and setting the stage for a darker and more intense season two.
Prime Video’s press release, though, hints that viewers may be treated to an entirely new setting for the new season. “In Season Two,” their statement reads, “exiled from home, Frank, Barry, and Sammy soon find themselves in New Foodland, a shining utopia for food and humans alike. But beneath the city’s glossy fridges and cheery smiles lies a dark secret that threatens the entirety of sentient food society.”
Prime Video also teased a number of new celebrities joining the show’s grocery list of characters, including Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose, The Dark Knight Rises) as Dijon, “a badass warrior-mustard princess who pilots the most effective ‘humey’ in New Foodland,” and Jillian Bell (Saturday Night Live, Summer of ’69) as Trish, “an empathetic nut that puts the wellbeing of New Foodland above all else.” Rogen, meanwhile, will return alongside other original cast members such as Edward Norton (Fight Club, The Incredible Hulk) and Michael Cera (Superbad, Barbie).
Like with the previous season, Prime Video reports that the new season of Sausage Party: Foodtopia will be showrun by Ariel Shaffir (Future Man, This Is The End) and Kyle Hunter (50/50, The Night Before), executive producers that also co-wrote the original 2016 movie alongside Rogen and Canadian screenwriter Evan Goldberg (Preacher, Pineapple Express). The series is co-produced by Annapurna Television, Sony Pictures Television, and Amazon MGM Studios.
