Deadline has reported that the three-part documentary Cocaine Quarterback: Signal Caller For The Cartel is set to premiere September 25th on Prime Video. The series tells the story of Owen Hanson, a former championship-winning football star turned drug mogul.Unrealistic Ideas, Mark Wahlberg’s (The Fighter, Boogie Nights) production company, is set to produce.
According to Deadline, Hanson’s story is one of victories and defeats. It begins with Hanson’s underdog story of walking on to the 2004 National Champion USC football team, to his times in the world of illegal sports betting, to his involvement with the cartel and drug smuggling. Much of Hanson’s circle made its way to the NFL and quickly began to make millions. The allure of their lifestyle proved dangerous as he found himself involved with the Mexican cartel. Initially involved with petty crime, he found his way up and landed himself in debt to the cartel due to losing money in a money laundering scheme.
Via Deadline, the FBI would eventually track him down, and Hanson was arrested. He was forced by court order to forfeit many of his substantial assets gained during his criminal activities, including $100,000 worth of gold coins, luxury vehicles, vacation homes, business interests, and sailing vessels. His takedown would be an international effort as the FBI teamed up with the New South Wales Police Department in the effort. The bust would uncover sports betting, money laundering, and thousands of kilos of drugs. Hanson would not be the only one to go down as 20 of his associates were also arrested. Hanson is now a free man, having been released from federal prison last year.
According to Deadline, executive Producers for the series include Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson (Instant Family, Entourage), Archie Gips (Wahl Street, McMillions), David Wendell (Spy High, The Golden Boy), and Jody McVeigh-Schultz (The Murders At Star Rock, Spy High). Schultz is also credited as the director.
