Prime Video has rescinded the second season order for its A League of Their Own adaptation, according to Deadline. The series premiered last summer and had been given an abbreviated final season consisting of four episodes. It is the streaming service’s second series to lose its renewal along with the sci-fi thriller, The Peripheral.
Created by Will Graham (Daisy Jones and the Six, Mozart in the Jungle) and Abbi Jacobson (Broad City, Disenchantmant) the series based on the 1992 film of the same name explored the players a part of the women’s professional baseball league during World War II. While the film focused on one team, the series brings in queer and women of color characters during the same time period.
According to Deadline, the series starred Jacobson, Chanté Adams (The Photograph, Roxanna Roxanne), Patrick Adams (Suits, Plan B), Kate Berlant (Duck Butter, Taskmaster), D’Arcy Carden (The Good Place, Barry), Priscilla Delgado (Killer Book Club, Abracadabra), Molly Ephraim (Perry Mason, Last Man Standing), Melanie Field (Heathers, Florida Girls), Patrice Covington (Bootyology, They Come, They Go), Roberta Colindrez (Vida, I Love Dick), Gbesmisola Ikumelo (Black Ops, The Last Tree), and Andia Winslow (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, American Experience). Supporting cast includes Nick Offerman (The Last of Us, Parks and Recreation), original film star Rosie O’Donnell (The Flinstones, American Gigalo), Sadiah Ekulona (Impastor, Kevin Can Wait), Lea Robinson (Twenties, Presage), Kelly McCormack (Sugar Daddy, George & Tammy), Rae Gray (Slice, Dismissed), and Lil Frex (Girls, Wild N’ Out).
Deadline reports Prime Video reversed the renewal due to production delays associated with the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The dual strikes have halted most productions as streamers seek to cut costs amidst the work stoppage. If the strikes continue through Labor Day, streamers could pull back on other renewals as well as series orders. The industry saw similar decisions during the pandemic as production times were delayed.
Jacobson took to social media to express her disdain for the abrupt cancellation. According to Deadline, she stated in an Instagram post “To blame this cancellation on the strike is bulls–t and cowardly. But this post isn’t about all that. About all the ways this show has been put through the ringer. Not today.” Jacobson went on to praise the series that not only won Outstanding New TV Series at the GLAAD Media Awards but also won Ikumelo a nomination for Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series at the Independent Spirit Awards.
“This post here is about the special show I was lucky to make with so many incredibly talented artists and actors and writers and crew,” Jacobson continued. “A show I’m so proud of. Filled to the brim with stories worth telling. Full of so much heart and soul and value.”
Produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television, Graham and Jacobson served as executive producers along with Hailey Wierengo (Uncle Wick, Boys Come First) via Field Trip Productions, via Deadline. Additional executive producers included Jamie Babbitt (But I’m A Cheerleader, Silicon Valley) and Desta Tedros Reff (The Purge, Daemonic). Maybelle Blair served as an consultant. The 95-year-old was an original All-American Girls Professional Baseball League member.
Season one of A League of Their Own is available on Prime Video.
