Beginning with the deep baritone that underscored so many trailers from the early ’90s and early 2000s, Prime Video has just released the trailer for its documentary series Cocaine Quarterback: Signal-Caller for the Cartel. The series recounts the story of Owen Hanson, a walk-on quarterback for the 2003 National Championship-winning USC Trojans turned drug smuggler for the Sinaloa Cartel. The trailer shows Hanson himself, dressed in a prison jumpsuit, featured as an interviewee in addition to numerous others from his time at USC and his post-graduate life as a drug smuggler.
Hanson grew up in Redondo Beach, not far from The Coliseum, and while he did not see very much play during his tenure as a Trojan, he was known as the go-to guy for off-the-field antics. His reputation for vice eventually led to illegal bookmaking. After graduation, his connections with superstar athletes would lead to further criminal behavior, eventually leading him to his involvement with the cartel. When his money laundering scheme lost millions, he found himself in debt to one of the most notorious criminal organizations in the world. Not only was he in deep with his former employer, but he was also at the center of an FBI investigation. Cocaine Quarterback: Signal-Caller For The Cartel will provide us with the full story, featuring archival footage and intense dramatization, behind this one-time athlete’s rise and fall.
The series will run for three episodes and premiere exclusively on Prime Video on September 25th, airing in more than 240 countries worldwide. The series is produced by Mark Wahlberg’s (Arthur the King, The Family Plan) Unrealistic Ideas. Wahlberg is set to executive produce alongside Archie Gips (Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, Katy Perry: Part Of Me), Jody McVeigh-Schult (The Murders At Starved Rock, Shiny Happy People), David Wendel (Spy High, MoviePass MovieCrash), and Stephen Levinson (Arthur The King, The Murders At Starved Rock). McVeigh-Schultz will also be sitting in the director’s chair.
