Prime Video has dropped the first official teaser trailer for Dead Ringers, an upcoming series remake of Canadian film director David Cronenberg’s (Crimes of the Future) 1988 film of the same name. Starring British actress Rachel Weisz (The Mummy), the series follows identical twins who work as gynecologists.
The original Dead Ringers movie was inspired by the story of Stewart and Cyril Marcus, twin gynecologists who practiced medicine in New York in the first half of the 20th century. Cronenberg’s highly stylized, thriller version of the brothers’ story starred Jeremy Irons (Lolita, House of Gucci) as Beverly and Elliot Mantle. In the film, the rivalrous pair of siblings partake in a dangerous game of lies and deception once they fall in love with the same woman. Prime Video’s series has kept the characters’ names but decided to change the story by instead featuring two sisters who supposedly share everything, from drugs to lovers.
More than changing the gender of the main characters, Prime Video’s Dead Ringers also seeks to explore women’s health care with modern sensibilities. In the trailer as well as in statements given by Prime Video about the series, there is a reoccurring theme of these doctors going above and beyond to challenge medicine’s rules to give women treatment that is ethical as well as beneficial. Based off of this, audiences can expect to explore this idea as well as the idea of motherhood, that is also emphasized in the trailer, through the thriller lens.
Dead Ringers is created by Emmy-nominated writer and playwright Alice Birch (Normal People, Succession). Alongside Birch, the directing team, made up of Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body), Karena Evans (P-Valley), and Lauren Wolkstein, (A Friend of the Family) are set to support her as showrunner. This new series also includes a talented cast including Britne Oldford (The Umbrella Academy), Poppy Liu (Better Call Saul), Michael Chernus (Orange is the New Black), Jennifer Ehle (Zero Dark Thirty), and Emily Meade (The Deuce).
All episodes of Dead Ringers will premiere on Prime video on April 21, 2023.
