A month after releasing the first teaser trailer, Prime Video announced via an official press release the premiere date for its upcoming crime thriller series, Cross. Based on the popular character created by novelist James Patterson (The President Is Missing, The Murder Inn), Cross will make its official debut on November 14 with Underground and City on a Hill actor, Aldis Hodge, portraying the detective.
Created by showrunner Ben Watkins (Hand of God, Burn Notice), the eight-episode series follows detective and forensic psychologist Alex Cross stretching the bounds of the law to solve the most heinous crimes committed by the most dangerous murderers. The series also stars Caleb Elijah (True Story, ReVerso), Melody Hurd (Fatherhood, Them), Ryan Eggold (New Amsterdam, BlacKKKlansmen), Juanita Jennings (Diarra From Detroit, Mayor of Kingstown), Alona Tal (Broken City, Cult), Isaiah Mustafa (It Chapter Two, Boy Kills World), Samantha Walkes (Orphan: First Kill, Murdoch Mysteries), Eloise Mumford (Fifty Shades of Grey, The Right Stuff), and Jennifer Wigmore (Y: The Last Man, Dream Scenario).
Produced by Paramount Television and Skydance Television, the series was first announced in development in 2020, with Hodge attached to star and executive produce in 2022. When the trailer was released at Prime Video’s upfront presentation in May, it was also announced that second season had already been ordered.
Additional executive producers include Watkins, Patterson, Bill Robinson (Instinct, Zoo), Patrick Santa (Help Me Rhonda), David Ellison (Reacher, The Big Door Prize), Bill Bost (Foundation, Star Trek Into Darkness), Dana Goldberg (I Am Legend, The Tomorrow War), Craig Siebels (The Gifted, Blood & Treasure), Jim Dunn (Haven, Daredevil), and Sam Ernst (Carnival Row, The Dead Zone). Additional studios include James Patterson Entertainment and Blue Monday Productions.
While this is the first series to star Patterson’s Cross character, the iconic detective has appeared on screen in films. Morgan Freeman (Glory, Now You See Me) famously portrayed the character twice in 1997’s Kiss the Girls and 2001’s Along Came a Spider. The most recent depiction was in 2012’s Alex Cross which saw Tyler Perry (Divorce in the Black, Mea Culp) play the titular role.
