Prime Video has greenlit a new documentary series covering the murder of four University of Idaho students in November of 2022 and the trial following suspect Bryan Kohberger. Companies Story Syndicate and Skydance Television are set to produce the series.
According to the press release, “the docuseries will be shot in conjunction with the investigation and research of bestselling author James Patterson (Along Came a Spider, The Murder Inn) and award-winning investigative journalist Vicky Ward (The Devil’s Casino, The Liar’s Ball) for their upcoming nonfiction title based on the murders.” The project also includes the talents of IDA award winner Matthew Galkin (Murder in Big Horn, Space Explorers) and Emmy winner Liz Garbus (Yellowjackets, Becoming Cousteau) to co-direct the series.
In addition to the docuseries, the press release revealed an additional project following the University of Idaho murders in the works at Amazon MGM Studios. A scripted series centered on the murders is in early production, with Garbus set to direct its first episode.
With the docuseries covering true events, Prime Video confirmed they have the “full and exclusive” support from family members of the murder victims, specifically Maddie Mogen’s mother and stepfather and Ethan Capin’s family. Garbus and Galkin commented, “We are honored that the Chapin and Laramie families have decided to exclusively collaborate with us to shine a light on the personal stories of Ethan and Madison, as well as Xana and Kaylee. Our unparalleled access to the families and closest friends will allow us to paint intimate and authentic portraits of all four victims and their lives at the University of Idaho, which were so tragically cut short. We couldn’t ask for better partners than Skydance and James Patterson Entertainment to help bring the definitive telling of this important story to the world.”
While the docuseries is in its early phases of production, it will stream in upwards of 240 countries and territories worldwide exclusively on Prime Video. As Patterson contributes to the Idaho Murders docuseries, his other series, Cross, starring Aldis Hodge (Black Adam, The Invisible Man), is further along in development at Prime Video via mxdwn.
