Prime Video Announces ‘Citadel: Diana’ As First Spinoff Series in Expanding Spyverse

A day after its official renewal, Prime Video’s spy thriller series, Citadel, announced the first of many planned spinoff series in what has been dubbed the Citadel SpyverseCitadel: Diana was revealed in a post-credits scene in yesterday’s season finale and is set for a 2024 release, via an official Prime Video press release.

The new series is set to star The Undoing’s Matilda De Angelis with Italy as the backdrop. De Angelis will be joined by Filippo Nigro (Suburra, A.C.A.B.), Lorenzo Cervasio (Il grande gioco, lo ricordo. Piazza Fontana), Bernhard Schütz (A Most Wanted Man, Sense8), Maurizio Lombardi (All the Money in the World, The Name of the Rose), Daniele Paolori (Pure, Marilyn’s Eyes), Julia Piaton (The Things We Say, The Things We Do, House of Time), and Thekla Reuten (In Burges, Red Sparrow).

Citadel is an action espionage series executive produced by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo (Extraction 2, Avengers: Endgame) in partnership with Amazon Studios. Eight years after the devastating fall of a global spy agency, two former agents are reunited and reprogrammed for battle when an adversary known as Manticore resurfaces. Starring Richard Madden (Bodyguard, Game of Thrones), Priyanka Chopra Jones (The White Tiger, Quantico), and Stanley Tucci (The Hunger Games, The Lovely Bones), the action-packed series is planned to expand as a global universe of spies, eventually connecting a la Marvel Cinematic Universe-style.

According to the press release, Citadel: Diana wrapped production earlier this year in Italy with ITV Studios imprint Cattleya producing. Showrunner Gina Gardini (Gomorrah, ZeroZeroZero) executive produced along with Giovanni Stabilini (Three Steps Above Heaven, Don’t Tell), Riccardo Tozzi (Petra, Django), Marco Chimenz (Summertime, Noi), and co-executive producer Emanuele Savoini (Four to Dinner, Rossella). That team is joined by the Russo brothers’ AGBO which includes David Weil (Hunters, Invasion), Mike Larocca (Cherry, 21 Bridges), Angela Russo-Otstot (The Gray Man, Relic), and Scott Nemes (Hanna, The Catcher Was a Spy).

Additional executive producers include Josh Appelbaum (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Happy Town), André Nemec ( Zoo, October Road), Jeff Pinkner (The 5th Wave, Fringe), and Scott Rosenberg (Disturbing Behaviour, Con Air) with Midnight Radio and Newton Thomas Sigel (Da 5 Bloods, Point of Origin) and Patrick Moran (Harrow, Xena: Warrior Princess).

The series was developed by head writer Alessandro Fabbri (The Invisible Boy, The Double Hour) and writers Giordana Mari (Corpo Libero, 1993), Laura Colella (Breakfast with Curtis, Stay Until Tomorrow), Ilaria Bernardini (The Girls Are Good, The Portrait), and Gianluca Bernardini (The Binding, Shake). Arnaldo Catinari (The Demons of St. Petersburg, Suburra: Blood on Rome) directed the series.

According to the press release, each chapter in the Citadel franchise will be locally crafted. In addition to the Italy-based series, a chapter in India has been planned with actors Samantha Ruth Prabhu (Kushi, Theri) and Varun Dhawan (Dilwale, Student of the Year) set to star.
