According to Variety, Co-creator of Pose, Steven Canals (Afuera) is working on limited series for FX titled 81 Words. The series will focus on the lives of heroic gay activists Frank Kameny and Barbara Gittings, who risked their lives to challenge the American Psychiatric Association’s definition of homosexuality; with the definition until 1974 considering those who identify as such mentally-ill.
The series inspiration came from Alix Spiegel’s public radio podcast This American Life episode “81 Words”; and the forthcoming PBS documentary Cured with directors Bennett Singer (Electoral Dysfunction) and Patrick Sammon (Codebreaker). 81 Words is set to be produced by Spiegel, Singer and Sammon along with Canals writing and executive producing the project under Story Ave Productions according to The Hollywood Reporter. Production Banner, with Elisabeth Seldes and Neri Tannenbaum executive producing via Pal Pictures. 20th Century Fox Studios will serve as the studio.
Canals graduated in the UCLA’s MFA Screenwriting program in 2015, from there he notably created his short film, Afuera, which debuted at the 2016 LA Film Festival. Pose premiered in 2018 being Canals first series, that delves into the 1980s and 90s ballroom culture. The series received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Drama Series in 2019.
There is no word for when 81 Words will premiere to FX.
