The show One Day at a Time is one of many shows whose production has halted as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. Following a mid-season finale last month, the show is coming back in animated form, according to Deadline. Written and produced remotely, the new animated special is set to air on Pop TV on June 16th following a marathon of the show’s fourth season.
One Day at a Time continues to be on air despite many obstacles – namely the coronavirus pandemic, but was also canceled by Netflix in March. Luckily for the show and its fans, the critically acclaimed sitcom was revived by Pop TV and continues to have new episodes for viewers.
Inspired by Norman Lear’s 1975 series with the same name, the sitcom follows the lives of the Cuban-American Alvarez family. In the animated special, guest star Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) voices Tio Juanito, a member of the Alvarez family who comes to visit. Cast members Gloria Estefan and Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) return to their roles of Tia Mirtha and cousin Estrellita, respectively.

The new episode titled “The Politics Episode” focuses on Penelope, played by Justina Machado (Jane the Virgin), who worries that the family won’t resolve their arguments over politics and executes many plans to endure her visit.
The show speaks to many as it tells stories of inclusion, diversity, acceptance, and more, speaking for communities with little representation. On releasing the animated special during uncertain times, Entertainment Tonight reports executive producer Gloria Calderón Kellett saying, “…we wanted to find a way to keep our family — on camera and behind the scenes — together and create more entertaining content for our fans who are self-distancing at home. This animated special gives us an exciting opportunity to imagine the Alvarez family in a colorful new way while continuing to tell important and relevant stories.”
