According to an exclusive with Deadline, Apple TV+ series Physical is set to end with its upcoming third season. This news does not come as a surprise, however, as creator Annie Weisman (About a Boy, Desperate Housewives) reportedly envisioned the comedy with a three-season arc.
Rose Byrne (Spy, Insidious), who stars as the protagonist, Sheila Rubin, and also executive produces the show, released a statement alongside Weisman following the announcement: “We are so grateful to Apple, Tomorrow Studios, and all our creative collaborators for the chance to bring Sheila to life in all her gritty glory. With this final season, Sheila’s three act saga of rebellion, recovery, and redemption comes to the satisfying conclusion that she and her fans so richly deserve. We feel so proud to share this last chapter with everyone.”
Additionally, the head of programming at Apple TV+ also commented on the news. Matt Cherniss said, “Over the course of three enthralling seasons of Physical, we have been honored to work with Annie Weisman and Tomorrow Studios to bring Sheila Rubin’s journey of transformation and personal empowerment to the screen through Rose Byrne’s fearless, moving, and often very funny, portrayal. We are aware of just how much of an impact this character and story has had on audiences around the world and can’t wait for them to join us on this final exhilarating ride that culminates in an immensely rewarding finale for this celebrated series.”
Via IMDB, Physical, set in San Diego during the 1980s, follows “a woman struggling in her life as a quietly tortured housewife, [who] finds an unconventional path to power through an unlikely source: the world of aerobics.”
The series premiered in June 2021 and was renewed for a second season just two months later. At the end of season two, Byrne’s character launched her first fitness video. While the video became successful, Sheila finds herself facing new competitors and a nasty separation from her husband.
The cast includes Rory Scovel (I Feel Pretty, Babylon), Dierdre Friel (New Amsterdam, Second Act), Paul Sparks (House of Cards, Boardwalk Empire), Lou Taylor Pucci (You, American Horror Story), and Della Saba (Sharkskin, Ralph Breaks the Internet). Zooey Deschanel (New Girl, 500 Days of Summer) is set to appear in the upcoming season.
Season three, which will total ten episodes, will premiere on August 2, only on Apple TV+.
