Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag), originally meant to star opposite Donald Glover (Community) in the Amazon reboot of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, has exited the series due to creative differences, according to Deadline. While Glover is still expected to star in the series, Amazon will now begin re-casting the female lead, with the series currently being written ahead of production which will take place next year.
The series is a remake of the 2005 action comedy film of the same name starring Brad Pitt (Fight Club) and Angelina Jolie (Maleficent), which follows a bored husband and wife who discover that they are both assassins hired by rival agencies to kill each other. The series adaptation was co-created by Glover and Francesca Sloane (Fargo). The former will also serve as executive producer while the latter will serve as showrunner.
Waller-Bridge is in production on Indiana Jones 5, and also serves as an executive producer on the upcoming final season of AMC’s Killing Eve. Meanwhile, Glover is in postproduction on the third season of FX’s Atlanta. Because Waller-Bridge is still based at Amazon, she will continue to develop other projects for the streamer.
