The biggest shock of How To Get Away With Murder‘s third season was revealed Thursday night when Wes Gibbons (Alfred Enoch) was the one who was under the sheet and had been killed before the fire at Annalise’s (Viola Davis) house started.
After the episode aired, Variety spoke with show creator Pete Nowalk to break down the fall finale and preview what’s coming in the second half of the season.
“The mystery really is who killed Wes, and within that, there’s a lot of twists and turns,” Nowalk said. Despite the different twists and turns, Nowalk said viewers are going to start getting answers as soon as the show returns.
Nowalk also said the dynamic between the characters start to shift as “Wes was such a centerpiece.”
Nowalk said he knew that Wes was going to be under the sheet when they started filming the seventh episode, which was being shot around the time that the show premiered back in September. He also said that Enoch was really understanding about his character being killed off and took the news like a professional.
For fans, it may not be the best time to start taking bets as to who killed Wes, because Nowalk still hasn’t decided who the actual murderer is. “Honesty, I’m still thinking everything…a little bit. We only have four episodes left to write, so I have to get to where I want to go, but I’m willing to change my mind…anything is possible. It could be anyone of those knuckleheads, or it could be someone from outside, too,” Nowalk said, adding that it’s also entirely possible that Wes killed himself.
Nowalk also said that fans will get to see Annalise start to hit rock bottom, something that he said Davis has been consistently bugging him about. Fans will also find out who the father of Laurel’s baby is in the first episode back and Nowalk noted that Laurel has a big decision to make about whether she’s going to keep the baby.
Meanwhile, if the show gets renewed for a fourth season, Nowalk said he doesn’t know if Enoch will return as a series regular or if he’ll be gone completely from the show with the exception of some flashback scenes.
How To Get Away With Murder returns to ABC on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2017, when the full Shondaland TGIT lineup returns.
