“Penny Dreadful” Casts Dorian Gray

Broadway’s Spider-Man, Reeve Carney, has landed another iconic role in the upcoming monster-centric drama series Penny Dreadful. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Carney will portray Dorian Gray, the central character of Oscar Wilde’s 1890 novel.

Penny Dreadful, which was ordered straight to series earlier this year, follows various monsters from famous works of literature, including Dracula and Frankenstein. Set in Victorian London, the series will focus on the creatures’ origin stories and explore the idea of what would happen if they were to encounter one another. Dorian, in particular, will be “confident and mesmerizing, yet somewhat isolated” in the world of the show.

In addition to his recent stint on Broadway, Carney has appeared in films such as “Spread” and “The Tempest”. He also starred in Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble” music video, which took home a Video Music Award at the MTV ceremony Sunday.

Penny Dreadful also features Timothy Dalton, Josh Hartnett and Eva Green. Juan Antonio Bayona, best known for his work in the horror genre, is slated to direct the first two episodes.

More casting news is expected in coming weeks, as the series is scheduled to begin filming in October in London. The eight-episode season will air on Showtime in early 2014.
