Actor Pedro Pascal (Game of Thrones, The Wild Robot) revealed a scene from his ever-increasing filmography he considers too painful to relive during an interview conducted by Vanity Fair and reported on by Comicbook’s Michael Hein. While watching a highlight reel of some of his most iconic scenes, Pascal winced at the appearance of a particularly painful conversation from HBO’s The Last of Us — though maybe not the one that initially comes to mind for many fans.
“Oh, I don’t want to see it,” Pascal smiled at the interviewers when the scene appeared, to which one replied, “Really?” “Yeah. I could talk about it,” Pascal replied.
Those familiar with The Last of Us’s brutal second season might hear the world “painful” and recoil remembering Joel’s torture and eventual agonizing death at the hands of Abby and her band of ex-Fireflies in “Through The Valley”; in reality, though, the moment in question came from episode six’s “The Price,” in which Ellie recalls the conversation in which she finally confronts Joel about his actions in the season one finale.
“This was one of the hardest and easiest, if that’s impossible to understand, (…) days of work I’ve ever had,” Pascal recounted to Vanity Fair. “We did this scene all day long, and I know that the context of things coming to an end as far as getting to play Joel alongside Ellie, and then of course, what the actual story is and the confession and all the walls coming down completely in front of Ellie and finally saying the words that had been impossible for Joel to say. Telling the truth basically. Recognizing the truth, and recognizing that that truth will like mean that Joel loses her, loses Ellie for good, but that he loves Ellie so much. He can’t lie to her again.”
In the original The Last of Us: Part II video game, this last conversation between Joel and Ellie is only revealed to the audience in the story’s final moments, even though it takes place much earlier chronologically. The HBO adaptation attempts something similar, but moves the flashback much earlier in Ellie’s journey, making it unclear whether or not Pascal will return for the show’s third season.
Pascal further explained that the scene was “really f*cking intense” to Vanity Fair due to his connection with co-star Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones, Hilda), who plays Ellie in the series. “Bella and I are like linked souls,” he added, “and this was the ultimate manifestation of that as scene partners on this porch.”
The Price received some of the highest acclaim of any episode on The Last of Us’ second season, which released to highly positive reviews this spring — though slightly less glowing than that of its original run. Season three of the series is currently in production, while those itching for another dose of Pedro Pascal can catch him in theaters later this month when he debuts as stretchy superhero Mister Fantastic in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Fantastic Four: First Steps.
