Created by Michael Jonathan Smith (Cobra Kai, I Own You), Rhett Reese (Zombieland, Deadpool), and Paul Wernick (Life, Deadpool), the video game adaptation Twisted Metal debuted on Peacock in July. According to Deadline, Twisted Metal has been renewed for second season. This news was revealed by Anthony Mackie (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, The Banker), who plays John Doe in the series, during The Game Awards where the series was nominated for Best Adaptation.
The official X/Twitter account for The Game Awards made a post about the news, stating, “Did you hear that? #TwistedMetal is getting a second season on @Peacock! @AnthonyMackie #TheGameAwards.” The post can be viewed below.
As Deadline notes, Smith spoke about the renewal, stating, “I have to give a Sweet Tooth-sized thank you to our incredible fans – I read every comment and was so blown away by everyone’s love, support, and rabid enthusiasm for a paper bag.”
He continued, “We are beyond thankful we get to continue the story of John Doe, Quiet, and Sweet Tooth as they face off against familiar faces and new grim foes in the long-awaited Twisted Metal tournament. The mixtape is made, and I’m thrilled to get back on the road with our stellar cast and crew.”
Twisted Metal is set in a post-apocalyptic world and follows John Doe who is in charge of delivering a package across the United States. If he can successfully deliver the package, he will be given the chance to stay in New San Francisco.
In addition to Mackie, the series stars Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Encanto) as Quiet, wrestler Samoa Joe (WrestleMania 37, AEW Dynamite) as Sweet Tooth, Will Arnett (Arrested Development, BoJack Horseman) as the voice of Sweet Tooth, Neve Campbell (Scream, The Lincoln Lawyer) as Raven, and many more.
Samoa Joe made his own post on X/Twitter celebrating the renewal, stating “Harold, get the keys!” In his post, which can be viewed below, he references the video game character Harold who is a paper bag that serves as Sweet Tooth’s best friend.
Fans of the first season of Twisted Metal can look forward to seeing how the story progresses in season two.
