According to a Puck article, none of the original cast members from the original series, Yellowstone, have signed to come back for its sequel yet, Comicbook.com reports. There is still the possibility that some fan-favorite actors, like Cole Hauser (Panama, The Ritual Killer, Good Will Hunting) and Kelly Reilly (A Haunting in Venice, True Detective, Pride and Prejudice) will be back, yet it seems a very slim one. Contract negotiations can take a long time to sign, and the longer the wait, the longer until the show will move forward with the sequel series, which is currently titled 2024. Furthermore, if the actors will earn larger paychecks if they come back, the budget for the show may not be able to afford to let many of those from the original series return.
According to Comicbook.com, there is still one hope for the original actors to return. Kevin Costner (The Bodyguard, Hidden Figures, Yellowstone: One-Fifty) has decided to leave the series and its existing franchise. This will allow for the possibility of giving equal paychecks to the rest of the cast, so they may be able to return if they want to. Furthermore, reports seem to claim that there will be new additions, including actors Michelle Pfeiffer (Hairspray, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Murder on the Orient Express) and Matthew McConaughey (How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, True Detective, The Wedding Planner), which could compromise the paycheck situation.
As of today, according to Comicbook.com, Yellowstone was able to release two different spinoffs that are focused on the Dutton Family in 1923 and 1883. The spinoff 1944, though, has still been announced, but it’s not in production. The sequel for Yellowstone was supposed to debut in 2023 originally, but the decision to release the final season of its original series in late 2024 made the sequel possible to debut after Yellowstone ended.
Reilly has shared, in an interview with RadioTimes this past month, that the previous reports who speak about a paycheck issue aren’t at all truthful.
“I just care about finishing [the main show] with as much care and as much passion and as much love as I can muster to put into it. That’s what I care about. I’m sort of prepping for that now [and] that’s my tunnel vision thing that I care about most,” the actor explained, via Comicbook.com. “And what goes on beyond that? There are discussions, you know. Don’t believe everything you read. It’s just nonsense. But we’re gonna, you know, let’s wait and see. I don’t have an answer right now. But we’ll see.”
Yellowstone‘s five seasons are now streaming on Paramount+.
