Deadline reports that Paramount+ has revealed the official trailer for upcoming anthology series, Lawmen: Bass Reeves. The series is set to premiere on the platform on Sunday, November 5 with two episodes. The trailer can be viewed below.
Lawmen stars David Oyelowo (Selma, Silo), Barry Pepper (Saving Private Ryan, The Green Mile), Dennis Quaid (The Parent Trap, The Rookie), Donald Sutherland (The Hunger Games, Pride & Prejudice), Lauren E. Banks (Canoe Poems, City on a Hill), Forrest Goodluck (How to Blow Up a Pipeline, The Revenant), and Demi Singleton (King Richard, Goldie).
It follows Bass Reeves as he goes from enslavement to becoming the first Black U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi. Reeves arrested over 3,000 outlaws while the moral and spiritual costs of the job weighed on him.
The series will follow various historic outlaws and lawmen in future seasons.
“Growing up in Texas, I heard a lot of stories about Bass Reeves. They were always akin to a dime novel hero with incredibly fanciful flourishes of a gunslinging lawman pursuing the most-hardened outlaws in the Wild West,” Bass Reeves creator and showrunner Chad Feehan (Ray Donovan, Banshee) said, according to Deadline. “Somewhere in my childhood that myth of Bass took firm root in my consciousness and never left. Then one day, not too long ago, David Oyelowo invited me to dinner. Over the course of our meal, he explained his seven-year journey to tell Bass’s story, where the myth of the man both converged with and separated from reality, and why Bass’s life was more relevant than ever.”
“I immediately went home and scoured the internet, read books and listened to podcasts,” Feehan also told Deadline. “I became obsessed with what I didn’t know, with all of the nooks and crannies of Bass’ remarkable life that aren’t regularly shared, as well as with revisiting the often-told tales through a now-adult lens. That spark of obsession morphed into a raging Fire of determination, fueled by my desire to play a role, no matter how big or small, and assist David in honoring the legacy of Deputy US Marshal Bass Reeves.”
Lawmen is executive produced by Feehan, Oyelowo, Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone, 1883), Ron Burkle (Safe Haven, 21 & Over), David Permut (Hacksaw Ridge, Face/Off), David C. Glasser (Agent Cody Banks, Shortcut to Happiness), Jessica Oyelowo (The Water Man, A United Kingdom), David Hutkin (My Big Fat Greek Wedding, The Illusionist), and Christina Alexandra Voros (The Ladies, Sal). It is produced by 101 Studios, MTV Entertainment Studios, Yoruba Saxon, and Bosque Ranch Productions.
