According to Deadline, Paramount+ has officially ordered the Frasier reboot to series with star Kelsey Grammer set to star. Grammer last played the iconic character in 2004 after eleven seasons on NBC.
In February last year, Paramount+ announced the series was in development with Grammer attached as an executive producer. The reboot itself had been on Grammer’s mind since 2018. Grammer confirmed they had just finished the script for the first episode this July. As of now, there is no release date or episode count.
Deadline reports the sequel series will find Dr. Frasier Crane in a new city surrounded by a new set of characters. The psychiatrist-turned-radio host will embark on life’s third act. Crane’s life began on the 1980s sitcom Cheers before the character received the spinoff set in Seattle in 1993. Here, Grammer co-starred with David Hyde Pierce (The Perfect Host, Down with Love), Peri Gilpin (Hellboy Animated: Sword of Storms), Jane Leeves (The Resident, Hot in Cleveland), and the late John Mahoney (Say Anything, Primal Fear). The series earned five consecutive primetime Emmy awards for Oustanding Comedy Series and 37 overall, a record for any scripted series at the time.
According to Deadline, not much has been revealed about the series plot. And other than Grammer, no former cast regulars are set to star. However, they could make guest appearances throughout the show’s run.
The original series was created by David Lee (Conspiracy World, Wings), Peter Casey (Encore! Encore!, The Jeffersons), and the late David Angell (Jake and the Fatman, Wings) via Deadline. The new series will see writers Joe Cristalli (Life in Pieces, Maggie) and Chris Harris (The Great Indoors, Acapulco) executive produce along with Tom Russo (The Game, Light as a Feather), Jordan McMahon (Phat Tuesdays, You’re Not a Monster), and Grammer. CBS Studios and Grammnet NH Productions will produce.
Grammer has been quite busy in recent years with appearances in Peacock’s true-crime limited series Dr. Death and features The God Committee and The Space Between, which were all released last year.
All eleven seasons of Frasier are available on Hulu, Paramount+, and Peacock.
