After a deal with HBO Max fell through, Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies has found a home at Paramount+. The new series, which is set to be a prequel of the 1978 musical, Grease, was in limbo for a few weeks of production looking for a viable suitor. Via Deadline, the new streaming platform on the block, Paramount+, was more than happy to take on a show with an already built-in fan base.
Since its initial release in 1978, Grease has been almost completely untouched by Hollywood. Minus the sequel that some members of the cast reprised their role in and a live-action rendition on Fox, the Grease franchise has quietly collected dust. The musical starring John Travolta (Pulp Fiction) and Olivia Newton-John (Xanadu) was one of the biggest classics of the early 80’s and still has diehard fans to this day. It only makes sense that there would be a revitalization at some point.
Via Deadline, the show, given a ten episode order, will be executive produced by creator and showrunner Annabel Oakes (Virginigate). She will share the executive producer title with Marty Bowen (The Longest Ride) via Temple Hill and Erik Feig (Step Up Revolution) via Picturestart.
The new show is set four years before the events of Grease, a time before Danny Zuko, Sandy Olsson, and even rock and roll. The T-Birds are not the coolest in the school anymore. Four girls fed up with the rigid teenage life will break all the rules and bring on a moral dilemma at Rydell High. The girls, starting as outcasts, will find their own fun in the 40’s.
Although the description appears to be talking about the four Pink Ladies from the original movie, Rizzo, Frenchy, Marty, and Jan, the prequel will bring on an entirely new slate of characters.
The new prequel is still very early in the pre-production process so more updates will have to wait. This gives fans a ton of time to watch and rewatch the cult classic that spawned the new series.
