According to Deadline, P.J. Byrne (Wolf of Wall Street, Gen V) has been cast as a series regular in USA Network’s highly anticipated series, The Rainmaker. The show is an adaptation of the John Grisham (A Time to Kill, The Firm) novel of the same name, with Michael Seitzman (Code Black, Intelligence) taking the helm as showrunner and executive producer.
The Rainmaker follows Rudy Baylor, played by Milo Callaghan (The Spanish Princess), fresh law school graduate who finds himself uncovering a conspiracy surrounding the death of his client’s son. Alongside his secretive boss, played by Lana Parrilla (Atlas, Once Upon a Time), Baylor goes head-to-head with courtroom lion Leo Drummond, played by John Slattery (Mad Men, The Adjustment Bureau), and his law school girlfriend Sarah Plankmore, played by Madison Iseman (Jumanji, Annabelle Comes Home).
Byrne has been cast as Deck Shifflet, a shoot-from-the-hip “paralawyer” at J. Lyman Stone who failed the bar seven times. The character was previously played by Danny DeVito (Matilda, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) in the 1997 film adaptation of The Rainmaker by director Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather, Megalopolis).
The series was picked up by the NBC Universal cable network in June. The show’s pilot was written by Seitzman and Jason Richman (Lucky 7, Detroit 1-8-7), and the two are executive producing alongside Grisham, Jason Blum (The Purge, Paranormal Activity) and David Gernert (The Good of the Woods, Camino Ghosts).
Byrne brings an impressive filmography to the show, including roles in Martin Scorsese’s (Killers of the Flower Moon, Goodfellas) The Wolf of Wall Street, Damien Chazelle’s (La La Land, Whiplash) Babylon, The Big Cigar on Apple TV+ and Gen V on Prime Video. According to Deadline, Byrne is soon expected to appear in James Mangold’s (Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Logan) A Complete Unknown, Bobby Farelly’s (Dumb and Dumber, Shallow Hal) Dear Santa, Neighbors opposite Anne Hathaway (The Idea of You, The Devil Wears Prada) and Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge, Obi-Wan Kenobi) and Riff Raff opposite Bill Murray (Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day).
As of now, no premiere date has been announced for The Rainmaker.
