Starz has ordered another original series to add to its lineup: Outlander, from Ronald D. Moore, executive producer of Battlestar Galactica.
Based on the series of books by Diana Gabaldon, Outlander follows protagonist Claire Randall, a married nurse in 1940s Scotland who mysteriously travels back in time to 1743. With seven novels and an eighth due out later this year, Gabaldon’s series has established a dedicated fan base.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Moore has stated that he is “very excited to have the opportunity to bring these books to life,” and he believes that Starz is the perfect home for an adaptation that will do the series justice.
With a 16-episode order, the network appears to be equally as enthusiastic. Starz CEO Chris Albrecht cites the series’ compelling heroine and complex story as elements that will set it apart and make it a valuable addition to the network’s established shows.
Outlander is the most recent addition to Starz’s original drama series after Power received a full episode order earlier this month. Both are set to begin filming in late 2013.
