After James Gunn’s (Superman, Guardians of the Galaxy) announcement back in 2023, HBO now plans to move forward with its Booster Gold series with David Jenkins (Our Flag Means Death, People of Earth) taking the reins as its writer, Deadline writes. Jenkins is widely known for creating HBO Max’s Our Flag Means Death, the beloved pirate rom-com that, despite garnering critical acclaim, was canceled after two seasons.
Deadline notes that the character Booster Gold was created by DC comic book writer Dan Jurgens, known for his runs on Superman and Action Comics. Booster Gold, whose real name is Michael Jon “Booster” Carter, was born in Gotham in the far future. He was attending university in his hometown on a scholarship when he was expelled for gambling, prompting him to take on a job as a night watchman at the Metropolis Space Museum, where he had access to displays of both superheroes and villains from the past. He earned his superhero name from saving former president Ronald Reagan. As a superhero, he joins the Justice League and is known to others for his search of wealth and fame; he does so by bringing back ordinary gadgets from the future to the present day to reinforce his “superhero” persona.
In 2023, the announcement of the Booster Gold series also came with the reveal that Wonder Woman would be getting a prequel series called Paradise Lost, which is still in production according to mxdwn. These two series, among other works, will kick off the DC Universe, or the DCU for short. This is only the “first wave” of Gunn’s plan to revamp the DCU, mxdwn writes.
The news of Booster Gold‘s new writer comes in the wake of HBO’s success with The Penguin, which is a part of DC Studios and separate from the DCU. Deadline also noted that it hit a whopping 24 Emmy nominations last week, including the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series award.
