It seems even Oscar-winning directors want to be part of one of the biggest franchises in history. According to Deadline, directors Daniel Kwan (Swiss Army Man, Legion) and Daniel Scheinert (The Death of Dick Long, Omniboat: A Fast Boat Fantasia), also known as “The Daniels” have revealed that they directed an episode of the long-awaited Disney+ Star Wars series Skeleton Crew.
The show has been in production for the last few years, even if only a few details have been revealed about it. The Daniels worked on the Star Wars series before the release of their multi-Oscar-winning movie Everything Everywhere All at Once in the spring of 2022.
According to Deadline, Skeleton Crew stars Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, The New Pope) and is being directed mainly by Jon Watts (The Old Man, Cop Car), who is better known for directing the newest Spider-Man movies starring Tom Holland (Uncharted, Cherry). The show is also being executive produced by two of the biggest names in the Star Wars franchise, Jon Favreau (The Mandalorian, Avengers: Endgame) and Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, The Book of Boba Fett).
Not a lot of details have been released about Skeleton Crew. The show has been described as a story set in the New Republic era which will follow “a group of kids lost in the Star Wars galaxy trying to find their way home.”
After the information of the involvement of “The Daniels” in the Star Wars franchise, the duo had to defend their decision to participate in the Star Wars show. In an Instagram story posted by Kwan, which you can see here, the director explains the situation behind their involvement with Skeleton Crew. In the Instagram story, he says “we guest directed one episode. Jon Watts approached us to do an episode a while ago (before EEAAO even came out). We love Jon, love Star Wars, love learning new tech, we love meeting new cast and crew, and we needed the days to keep our healthcare (!!!) so it was an easy yes. We shot it last year and had an incredible time working with the most talented cast and crew and I’m excited for you all to see it.”
Kwan also assured their fans that the duo was not working on a franchise’s new show and that their next project would be another original movie by them.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has not announced a release date yet. In the meantime, enjoy the newest season of The Mandalorian only on Disney+. Everything Everywhere All At Once is available to watch on multiple platforms including Paramount+ and Hulu.
