

MGM has just released information surrounding their upcoming crime series, The Westies. According to Deadline, J.K. Simmons (Red One, Spider-Man:No Way Home ) is set to be the lead role and will play Eamon Sweeney, the charismatic and ruthless leader of the notorious Irish American gang. What is currently known about the plot is that it is set in 1980s and follows the construction of the Jacob Javitz Convention Center, which seems to be on the gang’s turf. Furthermore, it was also revealed that somewhere in the series, The Westies will get in a gang war with the five familiies of the Italian mafia, even though the odds are against them.
In an interview with Deadline, Michael Wright (The Ark, Hotel Cocaine), head of MGM+ states,“J.K. Simmons is one of the finest actors working today. His authenticity and intensity bring an invaluable quality to this complex and exhilarating story, and we can’t wait to see him bring this unforgettable character to life.” Co-creator, Chris Brancato (Narco, Godfather of Harlem) adds in with,”J.K. Simmons doesn’t just play authority — he radiates it. We’re lucky to have an actor who brings the gravitas and danger that this world demands.”
According to Deadline, the crime drama will consist of eight episodes, each delving into the characters’ backstories and the reasons behind their paths. This story will surely be brimming with captivating mysteries and intense dramas that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats, eagerly awaiting the fate of each character.
This addition will certainly enhance the MGM library, which already features other notable mystery series like From and A Spy Among Friends. According to Deadline, production of The Westies is scheduled to begin in July, with an expected premiere in early 2026. Prepare for a raw and uncompromising examination of a legendary chapter in New York’s criminal underworld.
