According to Deadline, more Blue Beetle content is in the works at DC Studios in the form of an animated spin-off series. The series has reportedly been in development for a year now and will have Miguel Puga (The Loud House, The Casagrandes) as its showrunner and director.

Joining Puga on the project is Cristian Martinez (The Fosters, Good Trouble) in a writer position, reports Deadline. Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala, Contrapelo), Angel Manuel Soto (The Farm, La Carta) and John Rikard (Rampage, How to be Single), who were screenwriters and directors for the 2023 live-action Blue Beetle film will executive produce the upcoming animated series. The animated project will be overseen by Galen Vaisman (The Flash, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom), an executive producer for the original Blue Beetle film.

Specific plot and casting details have not been announced yet. However, it was revealed that “the animated series will build on the movie, developed under DC Studios’ previous regime, but will divert from telling the same story. Instead, the show will create its own story which, in success, could potentially lead to a return to the big screen for the giant blue bug portrayed by Xolo Maridueña (Blue Beetle, Cobra Kai),” according to Deadline’s exclusive insider source.

In the 2023 live-action Blue Beetle, audiences followed Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, an unsuspecting graduate facing the crisis of what to do after college. After taking a job with his sister Milagro, played by Belissa Escobedo (Hocus Pocus 2, Sex Appeal), Jamie finds himself at odds with corporate boss Victoria Kord, played by Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking, Thelma & Louise). The conflict between the two foreshadows an even larger battle between good and evil, especially after Jamie finds the Blue Beetle scarab and throws a wrench in Kord Industries’ plan to use the scarab for world domination.

As production continues for the series, more details will be revealed, including which streaming service DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation will make the animated series available on.
