One Tree Hill will return in a Netflix sequel via The Hollywood Reporter. The network is in the beginning process of a follow-up show that was previously released on the CW.
Danneel Ackles (Supernatural), Hilarie Burton Morgan (The Walking Dead, Dawson’s Creek) and Sophia Bush (John Tucker Must Die) are scheduled to reappear as their characters and become executive producers.
The producer of One Tree Hill, Warner Bros. Television., approves the continuation of the show. The writer of the sequel is Becky Hartman Edwards (Sex and The City, Parenthood).
Netflix and Warner Bros. refused to make a statement.
Along with Ackles, Burton Morgan and Bush, the series’ cast included Antwon Tanner (Sunset Park), Bethany Joy Lenz (Charmed, Savoring Paris), Chad Michael Murray (Gilmore Girls, A Cinderella Story), James Lafferty (Everyone Is Doing Great), Lee Norris (The Torkelsons, Boy Meets World), and Paul Johansson (Highlander: The Raven). A later cast featured Austin Nichols (Holiday in the Sun), Jackson Brundage (See Dad Run), Jana Kramer (Click), Lisa Goldstein (Who Do You Love), Robert Buckley (iZombie) and Shantel VanStern (The Flash).
Years after the show’s finale, Bush, Ackles and Burton Morgan brought comfort to One Tree Hill writer Audrey Wauchope (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) after accusing Mark Schwahn (Coach Carter), creator of the show, of sexually harassing her and Rachel Specter (Just Go With It), her writing partner. The remaining cast and crew members endorsed the allegations, stating they felt “psychologically and emotionally” mishandled. Schwahn will have no part in the sequel.
Burton Morgan, Lenz and Bush started a rewatch podcast about the show in 2021 called Drama Queens. In July 2024, Buckley became a co-host.
Edwards is executive producing the continuation with Burton Morgan, Bush, Danneel Ackles and her husband, Jensen Ackles (Supernatural). Emily Moss Wilson (Inheritance) will serve as a producer.
One Tree Hill broadcasted nine seasons and was released on The CW and WB. The show portrays the life experience of a group of teenagers, including a four-year time displacement as young adults in a fabricated North Carolina town.
