USA Network’s Mr. Robot celebrated its 10th anniversary at New York Comic-Con with a panel featuring Rami Malek who played Elliot Alderson, Christian Slater who played Mr. Robot and creator and executive producer Sam Esmail. The three spoke about their time on the series and how much they enjoyed their experience throughout the process of creating all four seasons.
Malek spoke about their role as Elliot and, after a clip from the series, talked about the hardships of playing the character and how it seems like he went through his own battles, especially with how rough he had to go back to filming and being in Elliot’s skin. Still, although it was challenging, it was worth it. The show changed his life, as he claimed and he learned so much from it that he carried it to future projects, as it gave him a sense of confidence after playing the role. The series even launched his role as Freddy Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, as he was approached due to his role as Elliot.
Slater concluded the panel by sharing a funny story about how his account was almost hacked. He stated that he received a phone call from someone who was clearly trying to obtain some of his information, and instead of hanging up, Slater played along. By the end of the conversation, Slater found out that the phone call was coming from a fan who was trying to see if there would be a spinoff series in the works. Although Slater would want nothing more than to continue the franchise, he is happy with how the series concluded.
Mr. Robot is a psychological thriller about a cybersecurity engineer named Elliot with social anxiety and Dissociative Identity Disorder who is recruited by an underground anarchist hacker group to take down a powerful, corrupt corporation known as E Corp.
The series is available to stream on Netflix.
