NickToons has been Nickelodeon’s home for original animated content since 1991, featuring shows like Ren & Stimpy, Doug, and Rugrats. However, no show comes close to the impact made by Nickelodeon’s most successful animated show, SpongeBob SquarePants, and according to Comicbook.com, NickToons will be rebranding as “NickSpongebob” this summer.
The cable network has announced that this is the summer of SpongeBob. According to Comicbook.com, SpongeBob SquarePants won’t be the only programming on the channel, but it will be the focus. The Paramount network has stated that this change is temporary, and just for this summer. The rebranding marks a celebration of the iconic show and the fishy inhabitants of Bikini Bottom we’ve grown to love.
SpongeBob SquarePants is currently the longest-running animated program for kids, with over a quarter century under its belt. The series has also seen multiple feature-length films, including Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie and Plankton: The Movie, as well as spin-off series like The Patrick Star Show and Kamp Koral: Spongebob’s Under Years. With no signs of slowing down, SpongeBob continues to entertain kids and adults all over the world.
In an interview with Comicbook.com, SpongeBob voice actor Tom Kenny (Adventure Time, The Powerpuff Girls) spoke about the late series creator Stephen Hillenburg’s (Underwater, Rocko’s Modern Life) influence: “I kind of see that with Patrick and you too now that you mention it. So much of Spongebob’s DNA is Steve and then there’s a little bit of mustard that we can slap on the characters, what we bring to it. We just trust what’s on the page and be them. The roadmap is so good and so clear, it’s like Waze telling you where to go.”
Hillenburg tragically passed away on November 26, 2018 at the age of 57 from Lou Gehrig’s disease. His legacy continues to grow as his iconic characters continue to delight fans with new content.
