SpongeBob SquarePants is getting a new show on Nickelodeon, according to Deadline. The working title of the new series is Kamp Koral. The show will follow a younger SpongeBob, age ten, as he gets into wacky adventures at a sleepaway summer camp. Fans can expect to see their favorite characters building underwater campfires, jellyfish hunting, swimming in an underwater lake called Lake Yuckymuck and much more in the new setting of the kelp forest.
Nickelodeon currently has a thirteen episode series order for Kamp Koral. Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller are set to be co-executive producers on the new series. The two were also producers on the original series. Nickelodeon’s Executive Vice President of Animation Production and Development, Ramsey Naito, said “SpongeBob has an incredible universe to expand upon and the greenlight for Kamp Koral is a testament to the strength and longevity of these characters known and loved by generations of fans around the world.”
Kamp Koral is the first spin-off series for SpongeBob SquarePants, however there have been two movies released in theaters based in the SpongeBob universe. The films are The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie and The SpongeBob Movie: Fish Out of Water. A third film, The SpongeBob Movie: It’s a Wonderful Sponge, is expected to be released in May 2020. Kamp Koral will step away from SpongeBob SquarePants’ typical 2D animation style in favor of CG animation, similar to the most recent SpongeBob films.
SpongeBob SquarePants has been the number one children’s animated series for the past seventeen years averaging more than one hundred million total viewers every quarter. It is also the most widely distributed property in Viacom International Media Networks history, shown in more than two hundred countries and territories and translated in over fifty languages.
Production on Kamp Koral is expected to begin this month in Burbank, California.
