Variety has reported that Nexstar, a large affiliate of ABC, has elected to join Sinclair in boycotting Disney’s decision to resume broadcast of Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Nexstar released a statement this morning.
Via Variety, “We made a decision last week to preempt ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ following what ABC referred to as Mr. Kimmel’s ‘ill-timed and insensitive’ comments at a critical time in our national discourse. We stand by that decision pending assurance that all parties are committed to fostering an environment of respectful, constructive dialogue in the markets we serve.”
According to Variety, the company did note that Jimmy Kimmel Live! can be viewed on other platforms. “In the meantime, we note that ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ will be available nationwide on multiple Disney-owned streaming products, while our stations will focus on continuing to produce local news and other programming relevant to their respective markets.”
According to Variety, Sinclair was the first to announce its decision not to air the program, with Nexstar following shortly afterward. Sinclair broadcasts 38 local ABC stations while Nexstar operates 28 stations. Sinclair announced their decision on Monday with a statement. “Beginning Tuesday night, Sinclair will be preempting ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!‘ across our ABC affiliate stations and replacing it with news programming,” The statement continues, “Discussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show’s potential return.”
According to mxdwn, last week, Kimmel made comments about the alleged killer in the death of Charlie Kirk. Subsequently, Sinclair and Nexstar announced they would not be airing the show via local broadcast. Disney then decided to suspend the show entirely. The decisions followed comments made by FCC chairman Brendan Carr, who insinuated a possible investigation into the companies for “news distortion” if the Kimmel was not pulled from broadcast.
Mxdwn has reported that, following deliberation by Disney executives, the company announced it would lift the suspension on Monday. “Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country. It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”
Via Google Finance, Disney’s stock price has dropped approximately three percent in the last five days while the Dow Jones rose by a little over one percent. Whether these losses can be attributed to calls to cancel subscriptions to streaming platforms such as Hulu and Disney+ is a matter of speculation.
