The newly-owned CW Network has acquired another series for its fall lineup. Deadline reports the crime thriller 61st Street has been brought back to life after being canceled by its previous network, AMC, in January. The series was a casualty of AMC Networks’ cost-cutting measures.
According to Deadline, the series is the most recent in several acquisitions within the last week for the Nexstar-owned network. Adapting its new programming strategy, the network has abandoned producing its own scripted content for importing already established series for cheaper costs. Most of the previous pickups were shows from Canada, the UK, and Australia. 61st Street is its first U.S.-made scripted series to join the ranks.
Created by Peter Moffat (Your Honor, Undercover) and J. David Shanks (Seven Seconds, Shots Fired), 61st Street was originally picked up for a two-season order by AMC back in 2019. Both seasons were filmed simultaneously with the first airing in the spring of 2022, according to Deadline. The series stars Emmy-winning actor Courtney B. Vance (Lovecraft Country, The People v. O.J. Simpson: ACS) as an aging defense and civil rights lawyer who takes on a complicated case representing a star athlete from the southside of Chicago. When police mistake Tosin Cole’s (House Party, Till) Moses Johnson for a drug-dealing gang member, he finds himself at the center of a chaotic manhunt after an officer is found dead. The show is a legal drama that examines the stifling systemic racism embedded in law enforcement and the courts in one of the country’s most segregated cities.
The series also stars Vance’s Lovecraft Country co-star Aunjanue Ellis (The Help), Bentley Green (Sweet Magnolias, Snowfall), Mark O’Brien (City on a Hill, Perry Mason), Holt McCallany (Mindhunter, Shot Caller), and Andrene Ward-Hammond (Loving, Project Power), according to Deadline. Moffat and Shanks executive produce along with Michael B. Jordan’s (Creed III, The Wire) Outlier Society. Jordan is joined by Hilary Salmon (The Watch, We Hunt Together), Alana Mayo (Without Remorse, Get Smart), and Jeff Freilich (Halt and Catch Fire, Lodge 49).
“There was a lot of love and hard work that went into making 61st Street,” said Vance via Deadline. “I’m thrilled that The CW has enthusiastically given all 16 episodes of 61st Street a network home. With The CW, I’m confident that we will engage a universe of viewers who will celebrate the series with us. My cast, crew and I can’t wait!”
According to Deadline, the first season is set to air this fall with season two premiering next year.
