Neil Patrick Harris makes his debut as Count Olaf in the first trailer for Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, released on YouTube today.
The show, based on Lemony Snicket’s book series of the same name, centers around the Baudelaire children – Violet, Klaus and Sunny – who, after the death of their parents, are sent to live with their distant, murderous relative Count Olaf.
Olaf unsuccessfully attempts to steal the children’s fortune and as they try to flee him, he orchestrates several tempestuous scenarios in one of his many disguises.
In the new trailer, we get a glimpse into the show’s fantastical and stylized world and its gloom and doom. Harris’s Count Olaf, while different in approach than Jim Carrey’s, dazzles as the multiple personas he plays.
A Series of Unfortunate Events comes to Netflix Friday, January 13th. The series stars Malina Weissman, Louis Hynes and Presley Smith (the Baudelaire children), Patrick Warburton (Lemony Snickett), and Joan Cusack, Catherine O’Hara, Aasif Mandvi, Don Johnson, Alfre Woodard and more, Rolling Stone reports.
