Springhill Entertainment has announced the debut of Churchy, a new series for BET+. Variety exclusively reported the news of Kevin Fredericks’ (The Family Exchange, A Workplace Comedy, Major Deal) series’ upcoming debut on February 15.
The cast includes stars like Lexi Allen (Things Black People Say Out to Dinner, Workplace Drama the Play, Churchy), London Solomon (Innocence, Churchy), Anthony Elfonzia (Wrath of Man, Wormwood Falling, The Accountant), Shani Shockley (Save A Life, LIVE FEED: Breakdown, Right Place, Wrong Time), and Mark J. P. Hood (Love You Right, Signature Move, Above the Line).
The creative team behind Churchy includes Melissa Fredericks (A Workplace Comedy, The Family Exchange, Churchy) and Jason Fredericks (Flawed, No Good Men, The Playmakers Show) who executive produce the series for KevOnStage Studios with Fredericks. Additionally, LeBron James (Space Jam: A New Legacy, The Shop, Survivor’s Remorse), Lezlie Wills (Antebellum, Oldboy, The Crossover), Jamal Henderson (Space Jam: A New Legacy, The Wall, What’s My Name: Muhammad Ali), and Maverick Carter (The Shop, More Than a Game, Space Jam: A New Legacy), act as executive producers for The SpringHill Company.
Fredericks stars in the series as Corey Carr Jr., son of the leader of a MegaChurch. The official description of Churchy as reported by Variety, summarizes the plot by saying how Corey Carr Jr.’s “life takes an unexpected turn when he’s bypassed for leadership of his father’s mega-church. Determined to prove his worth, Corey packs up his dreams and heads to middle-of-nowhere Lubbock, Texas, with lofty ambitions to build his own ministry from the ground up. However, after quickly stumbling upon the realization that small-town church life is an entirely different ball game, Corey slowly accepts that the path to spiritual leadership might just be funnier and more profound than any sermon could ever teach.”
Variety reported on Fredericks’ enthusiasm for the series when he said: “You dream to make TV shows, to ‘make it in the industry,’ but you can’t possibly imagine how it feels when it actually happens…BET is a network I grew up watching. LeBron James is a person I grew up rooting for. So, I would have been happy anyway, but to be partnered with SpringHill and have the show airing on BET, that’s just way more than I bargained for.”
