It’s a big night for fans of Dungeons& Dragons. Critical Role will premiere its new season Age Of Umbra: Sallowlands. The actual play series can be viewed on Beacon, Twitch, and YouTube at 10:00 PM EST/ 7:00 PM PST. Watch the trailer below.
Matthew Mercer (Thundercats, The Legend Of Vox Machina) will take on the role of dungeon master with players including Critical Role co- founder Laura Bailey (The Legend Of Vox Machina, The Mighty Nein) as well returning party members Jennifer English (Warlord, Elden Ring), Abubakar Salim (Jamestown, Raised By Wolves), Vico Ortiz (Our Flag Means Death, Everything Is Going To Be Okay) and Zachery Renauldo (The Manifestation, Blackout).
The official description for the new season is as follows: “Age of Umbra: Sallowlands returns to the blighted Halcyon Domain, a bleak realm rotting in the wake of its Pantheon’s abandonment, where ancient wonders crumble into ruin and desperate communities hold fast to the light. The six-part series follows five misfits, outcasts, and survivors into the Sallowlands, a once-vibrant lake of the Old World now transformed into a canyon desert of cracked badlands, swirling dust storms, and long-buried secrets. When a surprising development sends the group beyond the edges of the map, their search for answers could lead them to salvation, or into the jaws of ancient horror. Along the way, they face brutal adversaries and impossible odds in a dark and emotional actual play series exploring desperation, survival, and love in the face of overwhelming darkness.”
Age Of Umbra utilizes the Daggerheart Core Set created by Mercer. Daggerheart is designed for “long-term campaign play, quick onboarding, emotionally rich storytelling, and narrative-driven combat.” Age Of Umbra will seek to showcase Daggerheart’s highs and lows, seeping into the darker parts of the narrative while still allowing for heroes to rise.
Dungeons & Dragons has returned to the zeitgeist of late, with its own feature film and serving as a framing device in the massive hit series. According to mxdwn, Critical Role has partnered with Prime Video for a live-action series. They also have two animated series currently airing: The Legend Of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nen. Not much is known about the live-action project, but both animated series have enjoyed widespread critical acclaim, with perfect scores of 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
