According to The Hollywood Reporter, CBS authorized the script development for a new medical drama titled Watson a year ago. Now, in January 2024, CBS has officially ordered the series. Created by Craig Sweeny (Limitless, Elementary), Watson is likely to broadcast on CBS as a part of their 2024-2025 season.
This drama follows the life of Dr. John Watson from the Sherlock Holmes franchise created by author Arthur Conan Doyle (A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of the Four). The series specifically focuses on Dr. Watson’s return to the medical field after Holmes passes away. Morris Chestnut (The Best Man, Boyz n the Hood), who is also an executive producer for the series, is set to play Dr. Watson.
As The Hollywood Reporter notes, CBS has described the series as “a modern version of one of history’s greatest detectives as he turns his attention from solving crimes to solving medical mysteries.”
The President of CBS Entertainment Amy Reisenbach spoke about the series according to The Hollywood Reporter. She stated, “We are thrilled to feature such a beloved character from the world of Sherlock Holmes at the center of this series and have it brought to life by Morris Chestnut in a fresh and unexpected take on the immortal doctor.”
She continued, “Craig Sweeny’s bold new vision for the complex Dr. Watson deftly interweaves rich character storytelling with edge-of-your-seat medical mysteries.”
In addition to both Chestnut and Sweeny, executive producers for the series include Aaron Kaplan (Made of Honor, The Desperate Hour), physician and author Shäron Moalem (Survival of the Sickest, The DNA Restart), and Brian Morewitz (Black Cake, A Million Little Things).
Larry Teng (Medium, Supergirl), as The Hollywood Reporter notes, will serve as both an executive producer and director specifically for the pilot episode of the series.
Fans of Dr. John Watson can look forward to seeing Chestnut’s portrayal in this new CBS medical drama.
