Despite recent speculation, a New Girl reunion is not currently in the works. According to Variety, series creator Liz Meriwether (New Girl, Single Parents) confirmed that there are no scripts for a revival of the Fox sitcom, contradicting recent comments from Max Greenfield (New Girl, The Neighborhood), who played Schmidt on the series.

Greenfield sparked reunion speculation in late July during an appearance on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle. The actor claimed that a reunion was happening and that he had already seen scripts, describing them as “amazing.” Meriwether has since made it clear that those scripts do not exist.

“There are no scripts,” Meriwether told Variety while attending the season one finale screening of her latest series, Furious. She joked that she doesn’t even have scripts completed for projects she actually needs to be writing.

Greenfield eventually clarified his comments to Variety. While no television revival is currently planned, the cast does have an actual reunion approaching as Zooey Deschanel (500 Days of Summer, Elf), Jake Johnson (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Minx), Lamorne Morris (Fargo, Saturday Night), Hannah Simone (The Greatest American Hero, Not Dead Yet) and Damon Wayans Jr. (Let’s Be Cops, Happy Endings) will reunite at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in Los Angeles on Oct. 10.

The cast will receive the Rising Phoenix Award, which recognizes the show’s themes of starting over and those who help make new beginnings possible, Greenfield will also host the gala. Meriwether, meanwhile, has another major project keeping her busy.

She is adapting Britney Spears’ memoir The Woman in Me into a film, Jon M. Chu (Wicked, Crazy Rich Asians) is attached to direct, while Marc Platt (Wicked, La La Land) will produce. Meriwether said the project remains early in development and that she has not yet met Spears.

She also described adjusting from writing television stories that can unfold across several hours to developing a roughly two-hour movie. For now, New Girl fans can expect to see its cast back together in October, but Meriwether says there are no scripts bringing Jess, Schmidt and the rest of the group back to television.
